Night of a Thousand Dinners

Adopt-A-Minefield® and Clear Path International held another "Night of a Thousand Dinners" this evening. Each year on the first Thursday in November, people all over the world get together to increase awareness of the global landmine crisis and raise funds in support of mine clearance and survivor assistance. Landmines, a weapon of war first used during World War II, unfortunately do not stop killing and maiming once a conflict ends. In countries like Cambodia and Afghanistan, mines left over from years of conflict continue to inflict damage on civilian populations many years later. Adopt-A-Minefield® estimates that some 10,000 civilians are killed annually by landmines.

Advances have been made in recent years to curtail the use of anti-personnel mines. Yet while fewer new mines are being planted today, some 45 to 50 million mines remain active worldwide. Adopt-A-Minefield® and Clear Path are diligently working to clear these active mines.
