Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang was among my favorite locations for photography in Vietnam. I found so much color in the city. Its vibrant fishing fleet, lovely beaches and harbor, and colorful people could have kept me busy for days.

Yet despite the presence of so much color, this shot portrays a different attribute of Nha Trang. The reality is that colorful boats give way to rather drab, decrepit dwellings along the harbor. What you see here are in fact homes, most likely those of fishermen, and two women maneuvering one of Nha Trang's round basket boats through the shallow water of the harbor. The basket boats, made of bamboo reeds and a tar-like adhesive, are found all along Vietnam's Central Coast. Generally, they are used for making short trips between a larger fishing boat and land. In Nha Trang, fishing boats anchor all over the harbor, fishermen coming and going by way of the curious round boats.
