Improvization Bangkok, Thailand Copyright © 2024 OneWorldImages.com Among my favorite places in Bangkok is a large open space next to the Grand Palace known as Sanam Luang. The former site of Bangkok's Weekend Market (presently located in Chatuchak Market), Sanam Luang is often buzzing with activity on evenings and weekends. During the months of March and April, the kites are out in force. There are competitive kite fighters battling in teams (many of them adult men) and young children grasping spent beer cans, kites flapping just a few meters away. It is often a spectacle of near chaos, the kites crowding one another for precious airspace. It is colorful, lively, and fun. Although I have a number of Sanam Luang "kite shots," this is among my favorites. The shot is made primarily by this youngster's steady gaze and flapping kite, which remained just high enough to prevent his eyes from being obscured. I love, too, the Beer Chang can held high above his head, his other arm raised in attempt - it seems - to coax his kite aloft. One other detail worth noting is the amulet hanging from his neck. Although I cannot make out whether the image is one of a venerated monk or a Thai king, his amulet is typical of the Thais. << View Large Image >>
