Sâamláw Driver at Rest
Ayuthaya, Thailand

Motorized túk-túk have become the rage in the cities of Thailand. In much of Bangkok, one can hardly escape their noise and pollution. For this reason, I became especially fond of pedal-powered saâmláw. This particular vehicle was parked on a street near Beung Phra Ram (a lake in central Ayuthaya). I appreciated both the vehicle's adornments (the flags and colorful plastic "streamers") and its resting driver. Clad in an odd fluorescent orange, he had apparently paused for brief respite from trips pedaling tourists around the ruins. Taken just a single frame after "Hello Kitty," this shot portrays the (surprising) sense of serenity I felt wandering the ruins of Ayuthaya that day.
