From the moment I walked through the 5th Avenue doors for the first time, I knew it would become my favorite Seattle landmark. The Central Library, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Ramus of the Office of Metropolitan Architecture, opened its doors in May 2004. And in addition to being a fabulous library, the place is a fascinating architectural feat. The building is a massive structure of steel and glass; its interior boasts vast open spaces, abundant natural light, vibrant colors, and bizarre angles. At times, visitors must wonder if there's a 90 degree angle in the place.

This shot depicts an escalator leading to the top floor. Taken shortly after sunset, the photograph has an almost unreal feel as a result of the combination of colors. The visible steel structure - the "mesh" holding the glass in place - is similar throughout the building. Here's the view from below the escalator.
